Wet oxidation is a form of hydrothermal treatment. It is the oxidation of dissolved or suspended components in water using oxygen as the oxidizer. It is referred to as “Wet Air Oxidation” (WAO) when air is used. The oxidation reactions occur in superheated water at a temperature above the normal boiling point of water (100 °C), but below the critical point (374 °C).
Ultrafiltration (UF) is a type of membrane filtration in which hydrostatic pressure forces a liquid against a semipermeable membrane. A semipermeable membrane is a thin layer of material capable of separating substances when a driving force is applied across the membrane.

The MBBR system consists of an aeration tank with special plastic carriers that provide a surface where a biofilm can grow. The carriers are made of a material with a density close to the density of water. The carriers will be mixed in the tank by the aeration system and thus will have good contact between the substrate in the influent wastewater and the biomass on the carriers which will help to oxidise the soluble organic matters into H2O and CO2.

Firstly, the quartz reactor will be filled with wastewater. Then the catalyst namely titanium dioxide will be added from material port. For proper mixing a magnetic stirrer will be provided. After proper mixing of catalyst, the UV lamp will be started. This will excite the semiconductor catalyst into charge separation and electron hole pairs. The electrons and holes, on separation, assist in the production of the very reactive hydroxyl radical in the aqueous phase which can destroy many toxic organic pollutants.
